Event Details
This year Channel 4 is hosting three sessions as a sponsor of the Scottish Learning Festival.
Starting with a networking lunch at 12.30 - 1.15 on 25 September we will be running two sessions.
The first illuminates the contemporary debate about how when and why we should teach young people about sex.
The second showcases some of the outstanding new projects commissioned by Channel 4 Education's Matt Locke and Alice Taylor.
Lunch
12.30 - 1.00
Meet Steve Moore Channel 4's Education Adviser , the commissioning editors Matt Locke and Alice Taylor and the people behind Channel 4's new roster of education projects.
Sex-Ed Up!
1.15 - 2.15
How and when should we teach our children about sex? Earlier this year the FPA (formerly the Family Planning Association) and Brook - which provides sexual health advice to under 25’s - called for sex and relationship education to become compulsory in primary and secondary schools.
It sparked off huge controversy with critics arguing that this would compromise childhood innocence, encourage underage sex, increase rates of teenage pregnancy, abortion and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Advocates of sex education argue instead that children have a right to know about the emotional and physical changes of puberty and that we have the highest rate of teenage pregnancies in Europe because kids know too little not too much.
This autumn Channel 4 is running a season of programmes and projects which take a fresh look at teenagers their sexual awareness and relationships.
Sex Ed Up! will allow you to debate these contested issues and see some of the programmes and projects in the season.
We have invited the following to take part in the debate;
Shirley Fraser - Public Health Adviser - NHS Scotland
Harry Bell - Tern TV - creator of http://www.slabovia.tv/
Mary McGregor – Principal Teacher of Pastoral Care Studies at Webster's High School
Michael McGrath - Director of Scottish Catholic Education Service

C4 Education Showcase
2.30 - 3.30
Over the course of the few months Channel 4 Education has launched a series of new projects which are breaking new ground in public service broadcasting, education and the use of social networking services.
The School of Everything, The Insiders, Year Dot and Battlefront all in their different ways are providing new ways exploring how the network effects of the web can be used to disruptively innovate in the education marketplace, creating platform and tools to allow young people to connect, converse, collaborate and share and illuminate the issues that are most important to them including relationships, sex, careers and changing the world around them.
The C4 Education Showcase will provide you with an opportunity to meet, hear from :-
Matt Locke the Channel 4 Education Commissioning Editor who will set out his vision for the future of Channel 4 Education,
Paul Miller the founder and CEO of School of Everything
Simon Hankin – Director of Marketing at Holler (credits include Shameless, Skins, Year Dot)
Lucy Willis – Executive Producer of Battlefront, Raw Television
